In the world of freight transportation, especially for owner-operators, many myths circulate about the Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol Program.
These misconceptions can put your license, your business, and your future on the road at risk.
Today, we're busting the most common myths to help you avoid costly penalties and ensure you stay compliant with the law.

Myth 1: “I’m an owner-operator, so I don’t need the program.”
❌ FALSE.If your truck has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 26,000 pounds or you hold a CDL, you are required to enroll in the program—even if you're the only driver. Compliance applies to everyone who meets these criteria.
Myth 2: “I only drive within my state, so it doesn’t apply to me.”
❌ FALSE.The regulations make no distinction between interstate and intrastate transport. If you meet the DOT criteria, you must comply with the program—regardless of whether your operations cross state lines.
Myth 3: “I work for a company that complies with the program, so I don’t need to.”
❌ FALSE AND DANGEROUS. If your company is active and has a DOT number, you must also comply independently—even if you work for another company. DOT audits and inspections require it. Noncompliance can lead to serious consequences.
Myth 4: “I don’t need the program documents—they’re too expensive anyway.”
❌ FALSE.The DOT Drug and Alcohol Program is an essential requirement during audits and roadside inspections. You must keep all documents on board your truck at all times. Not having them can affect your operations and lead to fines or legal penalties.
Myth 5: “My friend has gone years without the program and nothing has happened to him.”
❌ FALSE.Don’t rely on someone else’s experience. The DOT audits 90% of new companies and also conducts random audits of established ones. The best strategy is to stay compliant from the start.
Myth 6: “I got a medical exam for my license—that’s enough.”
❌ FALSE.The DOT Physical exam does not replace the Drug and Alcohol Program. Even if your doctor adds an extra test, it does not meet DOT requirements. The medical card you receive does not prove you're enrolled in the program. It will not be accepted as proof during an audit.
Myth 7: “I took a drug test at a lab—that’s all I need.”
❌ FALSE. DOT tests must be conducted at certified labs and must meet the following criteria:
✔️ Official CCF (Custody Control Form) format
✔️ Complete information: name, license, and company
✔️ Results certified by an MRO (Medical Review Officer)Additionally, your company must be registered with a Drug and Alcohol Consortium and have a valid certificate to prove enrollment.
